Foster Pride Teen Mentoring Program

Find out about Teen Classes
Foster Pride’s Teen Mentoring Program is not only fun, but also a great way to learn skills that you can use in your future career! Foster Pride offers two programs for teens in foster care ages 14-22:

In Computer Graphic Design, you will learn how to make computer art using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator- programs used by graphic designers.

In Video Visions, you will learn to make your own short film using real television cameras and equipment.

Both classes run for 16 weeks, and have special guest speakers once a month who will help you learn about what it is like to work in the design, film, or arts fields.

Why Should You Bother Checking Out These Classes?
Don't take our word they can help you – listen to what other teens who’ve been there, and done it, have to say. (We’ve changed their names to protect their privacy.)

Charles – He Got into One of the Top Design Schools in the US
Charles struggled with his classes during middle and high school. He was interested in computers, but didn’t know how he could learn about them. During his junior year of high school he joined Foster Pride’s Teen Program and started learning from a graphic designer. She helped him develop his portfolio and get his college applications together. Charles was accepted into Parsons The New School for Design, one of the best design schools in the country. Charles graduated from Parsons in 2006 and is working as a graphic designer. After graduation, Foster Pride helped Charles find an apartment, a job, and took him on a shopping trip to Ikea, where for the first time in his life, he picked out his own furniture.

Rakeem – His Grades Went Way Up — and So Did his Plans for the Future
Rakeem, one of Foster Pride’s Computer Art Students, came to Computer Art every Saturday for two years. He used the program’s computer for homework as well as artwork and had access to the supplies he needed to create unique projects. During this time, Rakeem placed first in his school’s science fair and got an A+ on his book report on Rosa Parks. Rakeem is graduating from high school this year and plans to pursue a degree in Computer Science.

ALEX – He Got a Sewing Machine – and Is Designing His Own Fashions
Alex lives with his three brothers in a group home in. He loves sewing -- a skill he learned from his grandmother. Foster Pride got him his own sewing machine and gave him a scholarship to a needle arts class, where he could learn more each week. Alex started designing and creating backpacks, clothing, and gifts for his foster parents and siblings. He hopes to be a fashion designer when he grows up.
